Modification of forage quality after harvest.

ABSTRACT :

Roughage processing techniques are reviewed with emphasis upon those considered to be most important to present day and future agricultural practices. At the present time, a combination of physical and chemical treatment is probably most cost-effective in upgrading the nutritive value of most major fibrous and byproduct feeds. Physical treatments generally provide a greater surface area for attack by enzymes, whereas chemical treatments usually increase rate of fibre digestion. For chemical treatment, the ideal substrate is one which is at an advanced stage of maturity and highly lignified. Hydrolytic and oxidative agents, fungi and enzymes are discussed. Molecular biology may be useful in developing more rapid and efficient strains of fungi, and allowing large scale production of enzymes targeted to attack specific fibre moieties.
