Field monitoring and prediction of stored-grain insect populations.

ABSTRACT :

Monitoring programmes and predictive models can provide information about stored grain insect populations that is needed to make pest management decisions. Factors that should be considered in developing a sampling programme are discussed to help scientists and managers decide which sampling method to use, the location, number and size of samples to take, and the frequency of sampling. Automation is discussed as a means of making more intensive and frequent sampling practical and thus providing more accurate and up-to-date information for making pest management decisions. Models have been developed to predict population growth rates at different temperature and moisture conditions for 7 species of stored product insect pest (Cryptolestes ferrugineus, C. pusillus, Tribolium castaneum, T. confusum, Rhyzopertha dominica, Sitophilus oryzae and Oryzaephilus surinamensis). These models can be used to examine the effectiveness of a number of management programmes so that a manager can select the most e

ffective. Expert systems have been developed to allow managers to utilize more easily these predictive models.
