Naphthoquinone constituents of commercial Lapacho/Pau d'Arco/Taheebo products.

ABSTRACT :

Pau d'Arco, a plant material also sold as Taheebo, Lapacho and Ipe Roxo, is promoted as an anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agent. The plant material is thought to consist of Tabebuia spp., and Taheebo products on the North American market are usually claimed to be of South American origin. Lapachol and related naphthoquinones are reported as constituents of Tabebuia spp. Authenticated specimens of wood and bark of T. rosea (collected from Colombia and Panama), bark of T. impetiginosa and T. chrysantha (collected from Peru), bark of Cariniana sp. (collected from Peru), 15 commercial products obtained in Canada and 2 commercial products obtained from Brazil, were analysed by GC-MS and HPLC. Naphthoquinones were detected in all Tabebuia samples, although lapachol was not detected in bark samples; no naphthoquinones were detected in the Cariniana sample. The commercial products from Brazil contained lapachol, and 5 of the commercial Canadian products did not contain naphthoquinon

es. It is concluded that most of the commercial products were probably of Tabebuia origin. The levels of constituent naphthoquinones were highly variable, suggesting postharvest alteration of the naphthoquinone content.
