Problems and prospects of agribusiness in selected developing Asia-Pacific countries.

ABSTRACT :

This paper discusses some aspects of the problems and prospects of agribusiness in selected developing Asia/Pacific (AP) countries. Agribusiness is a major sector in the economy of countries of the region, accounting for a significant portion of the countries' GDP. The developing countries of the region produce a wide range of agricultural products that serve as raw materials for the agroindustries of the region. Countries in the region tend to focus on agroindustry in their development strategy. Available data show that agroindustries have been expanding rapidly in the developing countries of the AP. In spite of this rapid growth, a number of problems remain. Foremost are: irregularity in the supply of raw materials, inadequate infrastructure and transport facilities, lack of postharvest facilities, low quality of products, inadequate financing and credit, and licensing and bureaucratic red tape.
