Measuring firmness through mechanical acoustic excitation for quality control of tomatoes.

ABSTRACT :

A system, developed for measuring fruit firmness, was tested for its applicability to measuring firmness of tomatoes. The system is based upon a newly constructed sensor for detecting the dynamic response of the fruit to a mechanical impulse. Two different sensor configurations were experimentally investigated for their ability to measure the resonance frequency of a tomato. The preferred configuration was used to investigate the relationship between firmness and colour of freshly picked tomatoes and to determine the rate of postharvest ripening of tomatoes picked at different ripening stages. According to the presented results, it appears that despite the inhomogeneity of the tomatoes it is possible to sort them according to firmness or separate the green ones from the rest on the day of harvest.
