Postharvest life of cut roses as affected by varietal differences.

ABSTRACT :

Cut flowers of 10 rose cultivars (Angelique, Arjun, Dr. B.P. Pal, Caramia, Eiffel Tower, Priyadarshini, Raja Surendra Singh of Nalagarh, Raktagandha, Sonia Meilland and Super Star) were placed in distilled water or a preservative solution containing 300 p.p.m. 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate + 10 000 p.p.m. sucrose. Vase life ranged from 6.18 to 10.62 days in distilled water and from 8.10 to 12.28 days in preservative solution. In both cases cv. Caramia had the shortest vase life and cv. Raja Surendra Singh of Nalagarh the longest. The preservative solution increased vase life by 1.01-2.67 days; the greatest increase (from 6.48 to 9.15 days) occurred in cv. Raktagandha. The preservative solution also increased water uptake, flower diameter and petal area compared with distilled water.
