Effects of post-harvest treatments on keeping quality of ber fruits.

ABSTRACT :

Ripe fruits of Ziziphus mauritiana cv. Umran were harvested and subjected to 1 of 16 different treatments to try and extend storage life before being stored at room temperature (23-24 deg C, 87% RH) for up to 12 days. Dipping the fruits in 3 or 6% waxol and packing them in polyethylene bags gave the best results followed by packing untreated fruits in polyethylene bags. Using combinations of fungicides (captan or carbendazim) or growth regulators (maleic hydrazide, daminozide or 2,4-D) and dipping in 6% waxol had little effect on maintaining fruit quality, nor did a hot water dip (52 deg ) for 3 minutes. Fruits stored in unventilated polyethylene bags containing KMnO4 as an ethylene absorbent were unfit for consumption after 12 days of storage due to sugar fermentation processes.
