Infection of yam tubers by Aspergillus niger in relation to isolate, yam species, and temperatures.

ABSTRACT :

Infection of yam tubers with A. niger isolates, originating from different geographical areas, from yam and other hosts was tested on tubers imported into the UK using a standard inoculation procedure. A Nigerian yam isolate was generally more aggressive than an isolate from Barbados or from isolates from different hosts. Infection and wt loss of tubers were evaluated at temp. ranging from 18 to 36 deg C using the Nigerian and Barbados isolates. Mean percentage infection increased across the temp. range for the Nigerian isolate. For the Barbados isolate, infection increased with temp. only between 18 and 30 deg .
