Research in factors affecting the sanitary quality of cold-storage carrots.

ABSTRACT :

The study was conducted to improve the sanitary quality of cold-stored carrots. Limitations of the application of fungicides (benomyl, iprodione) to harvested carrots stored under opt. conditions (1 deg C, 98% RH) revealed by the results of lab. testing are discussed. An analysis of the mycoflora present on diseased carrots after 50 d in storage confirmed the prevalence of Mycocentrospora acerina. The sensitivity was also studied to M. acerina of carrots receiving various nitrogen treatments in soilless culture. When provided with food supply characterized by a decreasing availability of nitrogen, at given stages of crop development, carrots exhibited a lower occurrence of necrosis. It is suggested that the initial data should be confirmed on carrots grown in the field. The importance of growing techniques, particularly the use of nitrate fertilizers, and the knowledge of host parasite relationships for disease control is discussed.
