The effect of nutrients and variety on keeping quality during storage of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill. subsp. Capillaceum Gilib. Var. Azoricum).

ABSTRACT :

 

Of the fennel cultivars tested, only Zefa-fino and Fino were suitable for spring sowing. The plants were grown in large pots containing 30, 60, 90 or 120 kg N/ha and roots were stored at 5 deg C and 85% RH. N at 60-90 kg/ha gave the best yields but lower levels of N increased storage losses. The volatile oil content of the seeds was about half that of common sweet fennel but the anethole content was suitable for extraction. The mean root weight loss during 50 days' storage was about 15%. Conserving the roots as slices in 2% salt and vinegar or 4% sugar solution gave good results.
