New measures against superficial scald of apples.

ABSTRACT :

 

Granny Smith apple fruits harvested before the optimum harvesting date were dipped in solutions containing 1% Semperfresh (sucrose esters of fatty acids) plus butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propyl gallate (Progalin P-PGP) or a combination of BHT + propyl gallate (1:1), at 125-1500 p.p.m. Control fruits were dipped in 2500 p.p.m. diphenylamine (DPA) and in 1000 p.p.m. DPA + 1% Semperfresh. BHT at 750, 1000 and 1500 p.p.m. decreased scald significantly but it was less effective at concentrations below this. Propyl gallate did not reduce scald at any concentration and even when mixed 1:1 with BHT it was not effective. Application of 2500 p.p.m. DPA alone caused some lenticel spot.
