Scald control on apples without use of chemicals.

ABSTRACT :

 

Trials were carried out on 3 apple cultivars grown in the South Tyrol (Italy). Hot water treatment tests (1980-85) resulted in an insufficient reduction in scald. However, controlled atmosphere storage using ultra low oxygen (ULO) regimes (0.9-1.1% O2 compared with conventional levels of 2.5-3.0% O2) controlled scald on Red Delicious and Granny Smith fruits for about 150 days and on Morgenduft fruits for 210 days. None of the cultivars tested accumulated alcoholic flavours or showed any external or internal visual symptoms of low oxygen injury, either during or after storage.
