Storage of 'Monreal' clementines as affected by CaCl2 and TBZ postharvest treatments.

ABSTRACT :

The influence of postharvest CaCl2 treatments on Monreal clementines was investigated over 2 months of storage at 2 deg and 6 deg C and after subsequent shelf storage. CaCl2 treatment in fruits stored at 2 deg resulted in a slight reduction in chilling injury compared with untreated fruits. Chilling injury appeared to be more limited in fruits treated with thiabendazole (TBZ), when used alone and in combination with calcium. No beneficial effect was noted in the fruits stored at 6 deg , in which the incidence of chilling injury was consistently less than in fruits stored at 2 deg . The percentage of rotting in untreated fruits was about 4%, with negligible differences depending on storage temperature. Treatment with TBZ at the end of shelf storage reduced the rot percentage to about 1% in both storage regimes. A similar reduction was also found in fruits treated with CaCl2 and stored at 2 deg . This treatment was ineffective in fruits stored at 6 deg . The combined effect of the 2 chemicals show

ed that CaCl2 clearly reduced the efficacy of the fungicide in fruits stored at 2 deg and was deleterious to fruits stored at 6 deg . Fruit chemical characteristics were only slightly affected by treatments. There was a greater decrease in juice acidity in fruits dipped in CaCl2 and a more marked delay of senescence in clementines treated with TBZ.
