Response of 'Murcott' mandarin peel essential oil to cold storage.

ABSTRACT :

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the essential oils were carried on fruits that had been stored at repeating cycles of either 6 or 2 deg C for 6 or 18 days followed by storage at 14 deg for 1 or 7 days. GC and GC/MS analysis identified 34 constituents which accounted for 97.113% of the total volatiles. Storage at a constant 6 deg (control) or 2 deg for 6 days + 14 deg for 1 day produced an increase in the volatile compounds (acetaldehyde, formic acid, formaldehyde and acetic acid) and a decrease in limonene content. There was less variation in the essential oil composition when fruits were stored at 6 deg for 18 days + 14 deg for 7 days and 6 deg for 6 days + 14 deg for 1 day.
