Determination of ethylene produced by apples during storage and possible methods for its removal.

ABSTRACT :

 

The concentration of ethylene gas in storage chambers was measured under controlled atmosphere and simple cold storage conditions at Hungarofruct, Budaors, Hungary. In the controlled atmosphere storage chambers, the concentration of ethylene gas reached levels of 150-200 p.p.m., but in simple cold stores the amount was only about 30 p.p.m., as a result of ventilation and airing. In simple cold stores where the oxygen present is responsible for ripening, ethylene gas is relatively unimportant. In comparative model experiments 2 effective methods for the removal of ethylene were found: catalytic combustion and reaction with potassium permanganate. No suitable carbon-based adsorbent was found.
