Floriculture industry in India gets ready for export.

ABSTRACT :

The floriculture industry in India is discussed. Rapid changes have occurred since the late 1980s. The value of exports increased eight-fold between 1987-88 and 1992-93. Research has been carried out since the early 1960s. There have been a number of joint ventures where foreign companies (mainly European) have set up production units in India. The Ministry of Commerce has identified floricultural products as an important source of potential exports and, following this, a government group has made a series of recommendations for enhancing production. Problems include inadequate postharvest technology, limited germplasm availability (improving now due to various projects) and unfavourable airfreight costs and EU import taxes relative to some competitor countries.
