Effect of Pro-long treatment on quality of stored apples.

ABSTRACT

Fruits of cultivars Bankroft and Gloster were picked at early and late maturity and fruits of cultivars Spartan, Cortland and Idared were harvested just before the climacteric. All fruits were dipped in 1% Pro-long (a sucrose fatty acid ester formulation) and stored for 4 or 6 months at 3 deg C. At the end of the storage period, treated fruits had higher titratable acidity, higher internal CO2 and ethylene levels and greener skin colour than the control fruits. Pro-long had no effect on firmness or TSS and had a limited effect on fruit spoilage.
