Occurrence of cork spot (pit) in 'Alexander Lucas' pears depends on fruit mineral element content.

ABSTRACT

Fruits with and without cork spot were collected from the same trees in 1991-92. In addition, sound fruits were collected from the lower and upper parts of the tree. Sound fruits in the lower part of the tree had higher Ca levels resulting in a lower K:Ca ratio than the those in the upper part of the tree. Fruits with cork spot had significantly higher levels of K and Mg and lower levels of Ca resulting in K:Ca and Mg:Ca ratios twice as high as those of sound fruits. Ethylene production and respiration were also higher in fruits with cork spot and during storage they turned yellow and ripened more quickly than sound fruits. In 1993, Ca sprays increased fruit Ca composition and reduced the incidence of cork spot.
