Prognosing storage ability of Gloster apples.

ABSTRACT

The mineral contents of leaves, fruitlets and fruits were analysed from 17 commercial orchards during 1991-92. In addition, in one orchard a foliar spray (Phosyn products containing B, Zn, Mg, Ca and P) was applied. After 6 months in storage, fruit quality and the incidence of bitter pit was assessed. The frequency of bitter pit was always correlated with K, Mn and Ca contents and the K:Ca ratio, irrespective of the tissue analysed. Foliar sprays increased fruit Ca concentration and reduced bitter pit. Fruits arising from the terminal flowers had significantly higher Ca concentrations than those arising from lateral flowers.
