Effect of variety and fruit size on storability of apples.

ABSTRACT

In a study over 2 seasons (1990-91), Golden Delicious and Starking apple fruits from 2 locations were size-graded (<60 mm, 60-70 mm and >80 mm) and stored at 0-3 deg or 0-10 deg C. Weight loss and spoilage [unspecified] were assessed after 180 days' storage. Percentage weight loss was greater in Golden Delicious than in Starking but spoilage was greater in Starking fruits. Percentage weight loss was greater in small fruits than in large fruits but spoilage increased with increasing fruit size regardless of season, location and storage conditions. Total losses were greater in large fruits than in small fruits.
