Water balance in cut Anthurium flowers in storage and its effect on quality.

ABSTRACT

The basic components of water balance (water uptake, loss and accumulation) were studied in Anthurium (cv. Trinidad Pink) cut flowers placed singly in bottles containing distilled water and held for 30 days at 8, 13, 18 and 28 deg C (ambient). All components of water balance declined rapidly at all storage temperatures for the first 5 days, after which the decline was slower. Water loss and uptake slowed as the temperature decreased. The ratio of transpiration rate to uptake rate was less than or equal to 1 for the first 10 days at 28 deg while at 18 deg a good balance between transpiration and uptake (ratio of approx. 1.0) was maintained for 20 days. A good balance between transpiration and uptake was maintained in flowers at 13 deg for 30 days and these flowers showed higher FW and moisture contents compared with their initial values. Flowers stored at 8 deg lost their marketability after 10 days due to spathe blueing and symptoms of chilling injury.
