Tropical fruits: the social, political, and economic issues.

ABSTRACT

Most tropical fruits, apart from bananas and pineapples, used to be grown mainly in home gardens and small holdings for local consumption. Recently, many new tropical fruit export markets have developed. Changes in markets for tropical fruits and processed tropical fruit products (including fruit juices), the trend towards healthy eating which has led to increased demand for tropical fruits, the potential of tropical fruits for export income, and government subsidies and trade with Japan are described. Data are tabulated on production of bananas and mangoes in the Asia-Pacific region from 1979 to 1992 and on production of pineapples in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America and Africa from 1979 to 1982.
