Storage of dasheen leaves.

ABSTRACT

Dasheen (Colocasia esculenta) is cultivated extensively for its leaves and tubers. The leaves are usually cooked like spinach. When unpacked leaves were stored at 3, 10, 17 and 28 deg C the weight loss was 2.7, 3.5, 4.4 and 7.3%/day. However, packing the leaves in low density polyethylene film (0.025 mm thick) reduced weight loss to 15% of the unpacked leaves. The deep green colour of non-packed fresh leaves turned brown/yellow after 8 days at 28 deg (ambient) but packed leaves stored at 10 deg were still green with only a trace of yellowing after 16 days. Leaves stored at 3 deg turned brown due to chilling injury after 12 days.
