The effect of calcium chloride application on fruit quality and mineral content of fig.

ABSTRACT

A foliar spray of 1% CaCl2 was applied to fig cultivars Bursa Black, Goklop and Sarilop (synonym Calimyrna) (which differ in their susceptibility to fruit cracking) towards the end of the second phase of fruit development. Leaf N content increased significantly in the latter 2 cultivars only. Leaf Ca content increased in Bursa Black and Sarilop but not in Goklop, which had the highest Ca content. Leaf Fe, Zn and Mn contents were all reduced by CaCl2 application but Cu contents increased. Significant responses to CaCl2 application were found only in fruit Na and Fe contents. The number of both severely and moderately cracked fruits decreased significantly on treated trees.
