The effects of different localities and harvest time on the storage period of quince.

ABSTRACT

Fruits were picked from orchards at low (50 m a.s.l.) and high (800 m a.s.l.) altitude at 3 stages of maturity (early, mid and late harvest). The fruits were stored for 6 months at 0 deg C and 85% RH. By the end of storage, the rate of browning was 80-90% and 35-40% in mid-season and late season fruits, respectively. No browning was detected in early harvested fruits. Percentage browning was higher in fruits grown at high altitude than at low altitude. The eating quality of the late picked fruits was better at the beginning of storage. Early harvest and high altitude had an adverse effect on eating quality (respiration rate, astringency, sweetness, sourness, juice content, firmness, flavour and appearance).
