ABSTRACT

Peaches (cv. J. H. Hale) and plums (cv. Stanley) were wrapped in polyethylene (PE 35 mm), polypropylene (PP 12 mm) or polyvinylchloride (PVC 80 mm) and stored at 0 deg C and 90-95% RH. Fruit quality was assessed after 0, 2, 6 and 8 weeks' storage. Peaches stored for 6-7 weeks with the PVC wrapping had retained the best firmness and had the lowest respiration rate and the best overall quality. For Stanley, the best treatment was PP which resulted in the lowest respiration rate, the firmest fruits and the best overall appearance after storage for 6-7 weeks.
