Strawberry Guava, relevance for Reunion.

ABSTRACT

The strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum) is a relatively hardy subtropical species closely related to the guava, with round, red fruits about 2.5 cm in diameter. A review is presented of its ecology, botany, taxonomy, floral biology, propagation, cultivation, use as a rootstock, herbicide resistance, pests and diseases, and postharvest fruit physiology. In Renion it grows on the windward side of the island from sea level to 1300 m, forming dense stands in some areas. It has potential as a fruit crop for the wet highlands; agronomic trials were started in the west of the island in 1992.
