Evaluation of the quality of mango clones introduced to Sinaloa.

ABSTRACT

The fruit quality and postharvest behavior of 4 mango clones (Osteen, Palmer, Fabian and S1-25) were compared with those of the commercial cultivar Kent. Fruit weight, firmness, pH, titratable acidity and soluble solids concentration were determined immediately after harvest and following 15 days of storage at 20 deg C. In addition, pulp colour, fruit weight loss and weight of peel, seeds and pulp were measured at the end of the storage period. Immediately after harvest, Osteen and Kent had similar fruit characteristics. Osteen had the largest fruits and Fabian the smallest (516 and 387.5 g/fruit, respectively). After storage Osteen had the highest pulp percentage (83.2%) and the lowest percentage of seeds (5.8%) and peel (10.9%). Osteen and Fabian had a yellowish pulp colour, while the other clones had a more orange-coloured pulp. It is concluded that Osteen has potential as a commercial cultivar because, when compared with Kent, it showed similar or higher values of fruit weight, pulp weight,

sweetness and sugar:acid ratio. The postharvest behavior of Palmer indicated that it could be used for longer storage periods, because it maintained a high firmness and a low sugar:acid ratio after the storage period. Fabian had a high percentage of latent anthracnose [Glomerella cingulata?], which was expressed during storage.
