ABSTRACT

One-minute exposures to short wave infrared (IR) were as effective as the commercially used 5 min hot water bath treatment, in controlling anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata]) of mangoes cv. Kent. IR exposures of 1-5 min, and the 5 min hot water bath treatment did not control soft brown rot (Nattrassia mangiferae). IR followed by a 20 s prochloraz dip (81 g a.i./100 litres) effectively controlled anthracnose and soft brown rot. A 20 s dip in prochloraz (71 g a.i./100 litres), followed by 1 to 5 min IR exposures, gave satisfactory control of anthracnose, but did not control soft brown rot. IR exposures >2 min were phytotoxic in cv. Irwin.
