Chilling injury of tropical horticultural commodities.

ABSTRACT

Chilling injury (CI) is a serious problem in the postharvest handling of tropical horticultural commodities, with about one-third of all fruits and vegetables in USA markets being susceptible to CI. CI symptoms in tropical commodities, the physiological response of tropical commodities to chilling temperature and the importance of alleviating CI in tropical commodities are discussed. Postharvest techniques for reducing CI are reviewed, including low-temperature conditioning, intermittent warming during low-temperature storage, controlled atmosphere storage, chemical treatments and growth regulator application.
