Global regulation of pectinases and other degradative enzymes in Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora, the incitant of postharvest decay in vegetables.

ABSTRACT

The regulation of pectinases and other degradative enzymes produced by soft rot bacteria, such as E. c. subsp. carotovora, which cause postharvest decay in vegetables is briefly reviewed. The activation of these extracellular enzymes by plant metabolites, the 2 global systems controlling their production (Aep system and cAMP-CRP system) and the role of global regulatory elements in the production of pectate lyase in response to DNA-damaging agents are discussed. This paper was presented at a colloquium on management of postharvest disease resistance in horticultural crops held in Pennsylvania, USA on 23 Jul., 1991.
