Tropical fruit physiology and storage potential.

ABSTRACT

The postharvest physiology of tropical fruits and their storage potential is described. The storage potential of tropical fruits is limited by various aspects including chilling sensitivity, rapid ripening and postharvest stresses imposed on fruits by insect disinfestation treatments. These constraints are limited further by long distances to markets and a lack of appreciation and application of proper handling practices at the wholesale and retail levels. Areas requiring further research are identified. These include the effects of preharvest factors (such as nutrition and weather) on postharvest life; amelioration of chilling injury; heat treatments for pest and disease control; assessments of water loss and its control during handling and marketing; and simulated handling and storage regimes that will allow easier transfer of data to the commercial sector.
