Effect of chlorinated water on postharvest decay of asparagus.

ABSTRACT

The use of chlorinated water in the control of postharvest decay of asparagus cv. UC # 309 was investigated. Chlorine at 100-400 p.p.m. either from Ca(OCl)2 or NaOCl added to tap water or water from a ditch alongside the asparagus farm considerably reduced soft rot caused by Erwinia carotovora. Postharvest decay was most reduced when the concn of chlorine was increased and chlorine from NaOCl was more effective than that from Ca(OCl)2. Freshly prepared chlorine solutions gave better control of soft rot than chlorine that had been stored in solution for between 15-30 d.
