Susceptibility of wheat cultivars to postharvest losses caused by Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

ABSTRACT

Eleven winter wheat cultivars were tested in the laboratory for susceptibility to postharvest attack by S. granarius: measurements were made of F1 progeny production (PP), duration of development from oviposition to adult emergence (DD) and weight loss of infested grain, and indices of susceptibility calculated. Significant differences (P less than or equal to 0.01) in varietal susceptibility to weevil attack were found. S-d-211 was the most resistant cultivar, followed by Vlada and Hana; Viginta was the most susceptible. PP was negatively correlated with grain protein content, vitreousness, gluten content and index of technological quality, and positively correlated with grain weight losses. There were no significant differences among the cultivars in DD (range 56-58 days). Differences in susceptibility between the cultivars are ascribed, in part, to differences in grain moisture content, which was lowest in S-d-211.
