Effect of pre- and postharvest treatments on storage life of sapota fruits cv. Oval.

ABSTRACT

Sapota [sapodilla] fruits received preharvest sprays of 2 or 4% CaCl2, 1 or 2% Ca(NO3)2, 100 or 200 p.p.m. GA3 or water, 1 month before harvesting. After harvest, some of the fruits were dipped in the same solutions or in Bavistin [carbendazim] at 1000 p.p.m. for 10 min, before storage in polyethylene bags at RT. A combined pre-harvest spray application and postharvest dip in GA3 at 100 p.p.m. extended shelf life to 36 days (compared with 8 days in the water-sprayed control), and reduced physiological weight loss and percentage rotting. Postharvest application of Bavistin at 1000 p.p.m. (in addition to the GA3 treatments) also extended the shelf life (to 32 days) and further reduced fruit spoilage, but increased fruit acidity, compared with the control treatments (water spray and/or dip).
