Advances in Japanese ornamental horticulture.

In recent years, ornamental plant production in Japan has developed rapidly and in 1990 the area used for production of ornamental plants totalled 45 658 ha. However, this sector still has one of the highest growth potentials for future expansion in the agriculture industry. In this paper, information is given on the volume and value of cut flowers and pot plants produced, production methods, trends in demand, import trends and distribution within Japan. Recommendations are made for future research on breeding of cut flower cultivars with high productivity and long vase life, reduction of labour and other production costs, improvement of propagation procedures, better environmental control in protected cultivation, techniques to regulate flowering time and improved postharvest treatments.
