Is 'quality protein' maize more susceptible than normal cultivars to attack by the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais?

Populations, pools and varieties of quality protein maize (QPM) were crossed with normal maize and the susceptibility of the QPM and the crosses to Sitophilus zeamais was investigated in the laboratory. The QPM showed great variability from very resistant to very susceptible. The Dobie Index (a measure of susceptibility to insect attack) of the QPM group was not different from that of the QPM x normal. The numbers of eggs laid on the two groups were not different. QPM populations were analysed for protein, tryptophan, oil and phenolic content. Susceptibility was correlated with oil content and phenolics. It is concluded that it should be possible to breed for quality protein and insect resistance in the same cultivar.
