Quarantine disinfestation of lemons against Bactrocera tryoni and Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) using cold storage.

'Eureka' and 'Lisbon' lemons were artificially infested with immature life stages of Bactrocera tryoni or Ceratitis capitata, and stored at 1 plus or minus 0.2 deg C. Dose-mortality data from infested fruit held in cold storage for up to 14 days showed that 1st-instar larvae of B. tryoni and 2nd-instar larvae of C. capitata were the life stages most tolerant to cold. Of >43 000 B. tryoni 1st instars and >30 000 C. capitata 2nd instars, none survived to pupation after storage at 1 deg C for 14 days. Storage of lemons at 1 deg C for up to 32 days had no adverse effects on fruit quality.
