Occurrence and pathogenicity of Fusarium species in banana fruits.

Banana fruits in the early stages of decay were studied over a 6 month period to determine the incidence of Fusarium spp. and assess their potential pathogenicity. The 72 samples studied were bought in markets in Italy and Spain and had been imported from Panama, Ecuador and the Canary Islands. Of 12 Fusarium taxa found, F. semitectum [F. pallidoroseum] var. majus predominated, followed by F. moniliforme [Gibberella fujikuroi], F. solani, F. oxysporum and F. proliferatum. This is the first record of F. proliferatum as a contaminating fungus in banana fruits. F. subglutinans [G. fujikuroi var. subglutinans], F. acuminatum [G. acuminata] and F. graminearum [G. zeae] were the most pathogenic species. There were no noticeable differences in the species composition in fruits from different countries, suggesting that the mycoflora found is typical of the fruit and does not depend on its origin.
