Lighting for fruit and vegetable sorting.

The manual sorting of fruits and vegetables must be done quickly to maintain high productivity. During sweet cherry postharvest quality studies it was found that certain brown and grey coloured surface defects were frequently missed by the workers. Illumination levels for sorting apples, cherries and cucumbers on most commercial lines in Michigan, USA were <1000 lux. Typically, cool white fluorescent lighting reflecting off of a white sorting surface caused glare and eyestrain. Many light sources were tested to identify their effect on visual recognition of defects for various kinds of produce. Spectral measurements of produce, light sources, and the human eye provided an estimate of the eye's 'image'. Illumination levels were increased to a range (2500 to 5000 lux) that made defect sorting easier. Suggested guidelines are provided for improved design of the lighting environment in fruit and vegetable sorting areas.
