Sampling for Botrytis cinerea in harvested grape berries.

The effect of disease aggregation on the estimation of disease caused by B. cinerea in harvested wine grapes was simulated using computer models. As the degree of aggregation increased, the level of estimated disease also increased. This error was reduced when sample numbers were increased. When multiple samples (90) were taken from gondolas containing either machine- or hand-harvested berries and the amount of B. cinerea-specific antigen quantified by immunoassay, the machine-harvested berries showed a more uniform distribution of antigen than the hand-harvested berries. It is concluded that at least 2 samples of hand-harvested berries per gondola and 1 sample of machine-harvested berries per gondola would be required to obtain the same confidence of estimation of the level of disease.
