Effect of pre-harvest treatment of calcium compounds on the incidence of Diplodia stem-end rot of mango in storage.

Evidence is presented which indicates that the preharvest application of calcium compounds, a common practice for increasing the storage life and maintaining the quality of fruits, may predispose mango fruit to Diplodia stem-end rot (caused by D. natalensis [Botryodiplodia theobromae]). A storage experiment conducted under artificial epiphytotic conditions showed that both calcium nitrate and calcium chloride, at 2500 and 5000 p.p.m., significantly increased the incidence of disease on mango cv. Bombay green. Disease incidence increased with increasing rates of the calcium compounds and spraying twice was more effective than a single spray. Both calcium compounds also increased linear growth of B. theobromae in vitro on potato dextrose agar medium at 2000 and 2500 p.p.m.
