Effect of sucrose on postharvest physiology of rose cv. Serena.

Cut rose cv. Serena flowers were held in deionized water or pulsed for 6 h in a solution of 200 mg 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate + 80 g sucrose/litre. After treatment, the flowers were placed in open polyethylene bags and held at 2 deg C for 3 or 6 days. After this, the flowers were placed in deionized water to evaluate vase life. Vase life was not significantly increased by any of the treatment combinations, compared with controls. Flower opening, senescence and weight gain were monitored in all treatments and the results are presented and discussed.
