Influence of training method with or without chemical growth regulation on fruit quality of apples cv. Jonagold, Schone van Boskoop and Gloster.

Two pruning systems (free spindle and classical short pruning) were applied to standard apple trees on M.9 rootstock from the 2nd growing season. In both pruning systems, the effect of "repairing" the vegetative growth reactions with chemical growth regulators was investigated. Chemical growth regulation during summer was started in the 2nd growing season and growth regulation after flowering was started in the 3rd growing season. Daminozide (as Alar) was applied at 1.5 kg/ha in the summer or 2 x 1.5 kg/ha after flowering for the 1987-90 growing seasons and was then replaced by flurprimidol applied at 2 x 1.5 kg/ha in the summer or 2 x 1.5 kg/ha after flowering for the strong growing plots and 2 x 1.0 kg/ha during summer or 2 x 1.0 kg/ha after flowering for the free spindle trees. Fruits were analysed in July and at harvest. There was a significant increase in the K:Ca ratio for Boskoop and Gloster fruits in the plots with short pruning. The use of chemical growth regulation did not "repair" this effect. For Jonagold fruits, classical short pruning resulted in more yellow background colour. Storage quality was best in fruits pruned as free spindle trees with growth regulation using flurprimidol.
