A new postharvest disease of citrus in California caused by Penicillium ulaiense.

In Apr. and May 1992, 30 isolates of Penicillium sp. were collected from grapefruits, oranges and lemons at 8 different packinghouses in California, USA. The new Penicillium matched well with the type culture of P. ulaiense isolated from oranges in Taiwan with respect to growth rates on standard media, colony texture and colour and micromorphological features. It was distinguished from P. digitatum by its blue-grey spore mass and from P. italicum by its ability to form synnemata with white stalks. It is concluded that these characteristics and a relatively slow growth rate can be used to identify P. ulaiense on fruit, malt-extract agar or potato-dextrose agar. P. ulaiense was usually found in mixed infections with P. digitatum.
