Apple-apple impact evaluation using an instrumented sphere.

Fruit-fruit impacts are a significant cause of damage in many postharvest handling systems. Bruising probabilities were established for 2 typical impact situations for apples; where fruit is fixed in a packing bin, and where fruit is free to roll away after impact by another fruit. For a commercial bruise tolerance of 1 cm2, significant levels of damage occur for a 100 mm drop onto other fruit which are fixed, and for a horizontal impact equivalent to a 30 mm drop for the free fruit. Bruising levels were also related to impacts measured by an Instrumented Sphere (IS). In order to predict bruising probability from the IS output during an evaluation of a postharvest system, the various fruit-fruit impacts were identified using a video recording, as the recorded values for several different types of impact overlap on the acceleration/velocity change graph and it is not otherwise possible to separate the impacts and to determine bruise predictions.
