Some features of artisanal fish marketing in West Africa.

Where fishery resources are fully exploited and demand continues to grow, fishery management is warranted. With good management, new challenges emerge to make better use of existing harvest. The incentives are strong and primarily economic. Fish prices tend to rise, thus making it possible to use more sophisticated handling, processing, packaging, and transport methods. Higher returns require more time and money to be spent on processing and marketing, which in turn allows the realization of good prices at the market place. A market driven approach should open up new possibilities to reduce physical postharvest losses and add value to harvests. A brief account on on-going activities in West Africa illustrates some of the ramifications of postharvest operations.
