Product quality - tracking or anticipating the moving target.

This paper reviews some of the quality objectives relevant to a range of crops and emphasizes that the certainty of achieving these by breeding varies markedly and is dependent upon the crop. The Narrabri cotton breeding programme is an example in which quality trends were clear cut and successful quality and yield increases have been realized. Possibilities of quality improvements in cereals and oilseed plants are described. In horticultural crops, there is a range of quality perceptions which are modulated by environment, crop management and genetic components, that may act independently or interdependently in scion and rootstock. Quality attributes, common to a number of fleshy fruits, with an identified genetic component, include sugar content, skin colour and capacity to tolerate postharvest handling.
