Disinfestation of subtropical commodities with hot forced air.

The maximum temperature and duration that Dancy tangerine [mandarin] fruits can be subjected to hot forced air (45, 46 or 48 deg C for 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 h) without impairment of market quality was investigated. Factors which influence the rate of heat conduction through a commodity (mangoes, grapefruits and Valencia oranges) were also investigated. Market quality of Dancy tangerines was impaired by exposure to air temperatures above 45 deg for longer than 1 h but no deleterious effects on quality were observed after 4 h at 45 deg . The phytotoxic response of tangerine fruits to air treatment temperatures >45 deg included darkening of flavedo tissue and off-flavour development. Increasing the temperature or RH of the forced air during treatment increased the rate of heat conduction through the commodity. Commodity specific attributes affected the rate of heat conduction.
