A six-month study of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) abundance using a PC-based automated monitoring system in a rice warehouse.

A computer-aided monitoring system for Tribolium castaneum was tested on a rice stack in an operational rice warehouse over a 6 month period. The device was successful in monitoring T. castaneum over this time period. Correlation studies between traps placed at the 4 sides of the stack showed high and significant correlations (r>0.7, p<0.001). This demonstrates that all 4 traps were monitoring T. castaneum populations in the same way. The system performed well over 90% of the total operational time with few software and hardware problems. Most of the 'down' periods were attributed to electrical mains failure due to frequent lightning in the area. Studies on the levels of insect infestation monitored during 3 store-wide undersheet fumigations using methyl bromide were also included. The highest aerial trap catch of 1017 insects (corresponding to a within stack density of 4.5 insects per kg of rice) was recorded just before the first fumigation. The decreases in aerial populations after the 2 fumigations were 93 and 94%, resp. The effectiveness of various pest control strategies concurrently applied in the warehouse was investigated in relation to the information obtained by the system.
